Without knowing your seniority or how you fall out in the base bid, it's hard to give good gouge. The effects of commuting fall out differently from the top to bottom of a bid. I know some pilots in JFK that have commuted without a crash pad for the past 5 years only because they are able to bid commutable trips every month. For the vast majority, this is a pipe dream and need a crash pad. PHX to SFO seems like a pretty easy commute so you might be able to bid commutable trips and avoid one. Your life is going to change though as you lose some sleep the night before your commute, not knowing if you're going to make your commute flight or not. . . Driving to work and commuting are two different jobs. I tell my friends that my commute is my part-time job and I'm also an airline pilot.
