Take a lesson from your parents, "the greatest generation", don't exceed your means (mortgage crisis), work hard & retire at a point where you can actually enjoy something outside of flying. Don't pad your excess at the detriment of your kids/grandkids.
Most parents will tell you they strive for their kids to do better than themselves...your attitude is why so many are finding it hard to do so!
Very few Americans today can do better than previous generations. Sorry that is the way they stacked the deck during the last 30 years. During the work days of the "greatest generation" everyone did well if they worked hard from the janitor to the CEO and a large percentage looked forward to a pension. Today almost everyone does worse. In 1974 Delta Airlines signed a contract that would pay 747 Captains over $100,000 a year. In 2014 adjusted dollars that is over $480,000 a year. The skilled blue collar worker could support his family on his income alone. As a brand new 18 year old CFI at HPN in 1966 I earned $6 an hour. That converts to $43.84 an hour in 2014 dollars. I think you would find the current pay is closer to $25 or less today. The only middle class job that pay has kept up with inflation or beat it is the U.S. Military.
