I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they thought they had the problem fixed when they took off. What I'm wondering, is why they didn't simply make a tech stop at Gander on the return flight?

There have good mechanics there, and at the very least they could give the people in back a break. Not counting the amount of time for maintenance, they can easily unload, reload, and fuel in under an hour for a widebody.
