All airlines, yes even yours, have clowns that would probably be unable to get a job anywhere else. They either knew someone who pulled them through, came with a merger or had one good two hour period some years ago where they were able to convince someone they where almost normal. Yes, the supplemental carriers have a reputation for being the home of last resort, but that is fast becoming outdated. Many of your former coworkers are now at these airlines and choose to stay for many reasons. Even many of those who would be undesirable to the "respected" airlines are fine pilots, just a little outside of the stereotypical airline pilot profile, and thus stay happily in the supplemental world.
