It was some sarcasm, some note on the reality of life. Your point is well taken for families, I'm sure. But, I'd sure hate to commute to a regional job; sit on reserve after spending gazillion dollars on college and flight training only to be told you didn't do enough outside volunteer stuff. Different generation, I suppose, on my part.
