According to an AA recruiter and someone who conducts interviews, it depends on who you are. If you have plenty of internal recs, a good record, the flight time that they are looking for, etc... then yes you can get hired outside of the SSP. The internal recs need to be good (CP, check airman, corporate officer, etc..) and you have to stand out.

If you don't have the internal recs, then no...you will have a very hard time getting the call outside of the SSP.
