Few professions are infected with such a wide range of personality disorders, neurosis, psychosis, paranoia, hysteria, extremism (political, social) and general oddness as airline pilots.
Sorry to say, but I do not think airline pilots are particularly or uniquely skilled in the messed up department - pretty much every profession has it's statistical share of goof balls and screw-ups. Just that the media, and presumably the public, are disproportionately interested when things go wrong in aviation - and pilots are front and center, so to speak.
