Probe...we are not in a recession...we are not in a war...we are not furloughing and oil is not above some outrageous price...
We are in everything opposite you mention, thus the reason for displacements are not justifiable...IAH is not losing a fleet type, or losing airplane or routes...IAH is losing 737 flight hours to LUAL bases and thus causing the displacements to most pilots that got a position in bid 13-04 and 14-08, which UALALPA had a coronary about....how convenient right?
You are correct, there is less need for 737 pilots in IAH because there is less 737 flying being done in IAH. But it's due to more 170/175 flying, more Airbus flying, more 757 flying that has replaced those 737 airframes which have moved to other bases. Two of which (ORD and Den) opened before LUAL pilots could even bid for those 737 slots. So that flying was solely done by LCAL pilots for a long time. The total number of flights in IAH is not dramatically different year over year, it's just that less 737's are doing those flights.
And the impending surplus will reflect that. It's not about getting back at junior pilots on the 737, it's about having the correct manpower staffing for the amount of flying it does there. And right now IAH 737 is way over staffed according to the company.
