Airlines don't typically take culture or brand experience into account when they eye a merge partner. SW wants the Caribbean and Latin America, JetBlue has both in large quantities. SW has an underwhelming NY presence, JB is the largest domestic carrier out of JFK with their own terminal to include international (which SW would want.) JB owns Boston, SW would like to lock up North of NY.
There are many things SW wants that they can not acquire organically.
