AWAC owns some A/C outright and some are leased. Registration terms don't always coincide with lease terms.

They still need to complete the flights in the meantime to get paid.

My best guess as to why you don't hear any news is the simple fact that management is trying to induce enough fear to cave for a concessionary contract. Thankfully we have enough senior lifers here, and strong negotiating committee, that I don't ever see it happening. Not after what this company did with the concessions they gave with United.
Or with the amount of hiring they have enough junior guys to agree to said concessionary contract.
