They'll have a much higher QOL this year. Long call quicker, secondary line quicker, primary line quicker, weekends off quicker. Most guys are then being held (at group two rates with the above QOL) for 3 to 9 months. At that point you can pretty much SAP anything you want and pick up/drop whatever you want in open time.

There are two major downsides to the 190, both thanks to this new contract and the crappy group 1 rates.

The first downside is timing your exit. You have to hope there is a permanent bid around your 1 year point. If not, it could cost you a few months of group 2 pay (roughly $42 per hour difference in year two!)


The second and probably biggest is that when the music stops, you don't want to stuck in the right seat (or left seat for that matter) of the 190, the pay difference is massive and a decade stuck there (it could happen) would cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars. To me, this is the only reason not to bid it as a new hire.
