I suppose so. I think the only reason this trip is legal per FAR 117 is because it's a dead-head on the leg home so it doesn't count as part of your 12 hour duty day. Otherwise he needs 30ish hours off for rest after going over 12 (I think).
Per 117 a pilot is entitled to compensatory rest equal to the length of the duty period in which the deadhead occurred if said duty period exceeds the max duty period listed in the unaugmented table.
For example, if the unaugmented duty period limit is 12 and the deadhead duty period is 13, the pilot needs 13 hours rest before his next flight duty period.
