Flow…
That's a fair point. I am a bit jaded against EK just because of the comparison of when I first arrived on the property to todays environment.
Yes, of course there are some good things. I will list them here.
You can actually save some pretty good money each month as a single guy. Your overhead will be relatively low since the housing and all utilities are accounted for living in company accommodation. Also you can live outside company accom and get about $3,500/month to do so, but of course it will be considered taxable income to the IRS so you lose about 30% of that right off the top… just something to be aware of.
Free medical for you, free dental for you, transport to and from all flights and training events. The flying is fun… no two ways about it. The issue with that part is, it's a crazy mix of night day/day night stuff with short haul and then long haul, eastbound, westbound.
Tax free salary (but IRS will want taxes on anything earned above about 100K… so FO's usually don't get hit with this for the first few years)
Gotta say there is pretty good social climate in Dubai with the cabin crew if you're so inclined. Oh to be in my late 20's again!
Free uniforms every couple of years. You can get an interest free car loan to the tune of about 20K paid back over either 4 or 5 years I think.
So….. yes, there are good things about the place but just be aware that no matter what you think it's going to be…. it won't quite be that.
They're going to work you very hard. And if you get a trip either cancelled or taken away, you do not get those days off, you are put on reserve, to include being called for sim support for a PPC which are you supposed to be ready for at any time. It's a preferential bid system here, so you won't get to add many vacation days at the front or back of those leave days. And no conflicts from one month into the next. You'll be flying 900 hours a year, or more with Long haul because time in the bunk doesn't count towards that 900.
Anyways, there are some good things!! :-)
