Correct, the only real downside if you did send them directly to the airline and they did not respond would be that you can not enter sim training (by the FAA book) or ground school (most companys rules) untill 30 days have past since the request was mailed. Again no harm no foul unless the carrier is trying to fill a class with 2 weeks notice....
