The article hinted it was a programming glitch. It would have to be systemic to affect more than one iPad in the same manner at the same phase of flight (just before takeoff). It will be interesting to see if it was the company (Jepps) or a constraint AA put on the tablet.
Apparently, it's become quite the internet story.
AppleInsider is crediting a runway map for Ronald Reagen Washington as the culprit. Looks like it crashed the whole Jeppesen App. It also looks like American doesn't have the safeguards we have in place to combat that issue.
I haven't seen CNN yet, but I'm sure their 'aviation experts' are coming up with all kinds of opinions on the safety of iPads in the flight deck, how hackers could bring doom to airlines that use EFBs and other such nonsense.
What was VERY interesting was seeing quotes from "tech savvy" Austin-bound travelers who had their own opinions, ie., "paper maps don't crash"!
