I am a newby at ASA and it seems good enough. I haven't found anything I don't like yet. They put us in a nice hotel (Westin) for all 90 days of training through IOE....the trainers are a blast.....most everyone has high hopes for the airline. They are negotiating the contract more today and we'll see where it stands after that. Personally, (without having flown the line) I don't really see the BIG deal with the contract other than the scope clauses and some money issues - but lets face it my generation (21yrs old) came into this industry knowing the pay sucked. A one dollar pay increase for new hires (that is a definate to my understanding) is just another small thing to consider. The scope clause is the only thing to worry about but I can't see why it would be beneficial to change it much other than to get rid of 2 management teams. All in all they have a lot of Delta connection routes that will get covered by one company or the other. I just can't see it that anyone at ASA will lose a job anytime soon. Truth be told, if it isn't one thing it is another. One great thing is that it is an openly discussed thing. The ALPA guys give us information all the time. The management team slightly addressed some things too. From my feelings I think they will sign a new contract soon. Let's face it though, if you never knew any different....a newly signed contract won't make that big of a deal. The airline isn't going anywhere. Basically, ASA has the contract issue.....PSA has theirs (I'm not familiar with that company, but I'm sure they have something going on) Pick the company that works best for you. I can't recommend PSA because I don't know them, but I can recommend ASA based on what I have seen of them (which isn't much). A 1 leg commute out of my hometown on my own airline was a big decision factor for me. I liked they fact ASA has never furloughed and has always been profitable. I don't see much changing. The previous post is true about upgrade times and reserve. I received the CRJ200 (which all but 2 in my class did........the two youngest got the ATR) and I have been told by what I would consider reliable sources to expect about a 30 day reserve period. Upgrade time they said to expect 2.5-3 years. I have been told the CRJ700 and the ATR run about 6 months for reserve. Another thing is that these guys will get you through training. I'm not implying that you'll have any issues, but from the impression I get they are having more and more fail as minimums get lower. They actually met with one person on a weekend to help them study for about 6 hours. The common phrase is "no child left behind". They have come to the realization that the new hires aren't as experienced as they used to be and are working with it. Just don't hold on the glideslope or anything and you will get through. Just be optimistic and know what you are getting into.....consider domiciles, cost of living, aircraft, pay, atmosphere and don't go by what people say on here. Find someone that flies for the company and talk to them in person. These were all considerations for me. I can't say not PSA but I can say ASA doesn't seem to be what people on here have made it out to be.
