Our situation is I hate commuting and told her I'm moving to a domicile, but since she followed me throughout my military career she can pick which one. She picked ATL which I'd prefer to avoid. My wife is from Texas so MSP, DTW, SLC, SEA, and NYC all get tossed in the trash due to the weather. However, my wife is no dummy and she sees all the green slips in NYC I miss due to my commute, so greed starts to fight with cold and maybe I've got a chance to avoid ATL. Just not sure if the cure is better than the disease

.
Having lived in a northern climate, I can tell you with 100% certainty that MSP and DTW are in a far different category that SLC and SEA for winter weather.
The average low temperature from Dec - Feb is the same or WARMER in SEA than ATL. The average summer in SEA is far more tolerable than ATL.

The cost of living in in other areas may outweigh the GS and quick upgrade appeal of NYC.
