At least Knoxville is near Charlotte.
Out station crew bases do not need to be near any hub, they just need to have a lot of flights and overnighting aircraft to work. SDF/BNA/CVG are all central locations that could get flights from multiple AA hubs. RAH has a crew base in SDF and Mesa used to have one in BNA.
