I worked for AWAC for the better part of 9 years and left for Delta last December. First, AWAC's pilot group is older than most other regionals. They hired furiously in '05 and '06 so, as a result, the vast majority of their captains flew for the United operation and lived in Denver or Chicago before they started the U.S. Air contract. The guys also have 10k or more T-PIC which, unfortunately as some have argued, makes them "overqualified" in the eyes of the majors. These pilots tend to be middle-aged with kids well into grade school or even high school which forces them to commute to their east coast bases so they don't have to live in the very expensive bases ZW has. They also easily pull down well into six figures flying a 50 seat RJ and have great seniority and fantastic healthcare plans.
Add all this up and I can understand the desire to be picky about flying for a specific airline in a specific base. Can we all agree the odds aren't great that this guy will get what he wants? Sure. Based on my ZW experience everyone there is intelligent and knows what they are doing. He'll land on his feet.
