When I see the fcifs concerning vacation buyback and subsequently advance volunteer, I always wonder how many vacations they truly buyback and how much advance vol they actually do during the month. Buying back 1 vacation in a seat gives them the option of advance vol if they need it as well as the appearance of being short in a seat, thus subjecting the pilots in that seat to jump on every open trip with makeup as soon as it opens. Obviously there are a few seats that are undermanned, but open time seems sparse in most seats during the month to the point that guys constantly complain that there is no trip trading unless you are camped out on the computer.
I think that is dead on, at least as far as the Airbus goes. I always wondered if they sell back one vacation, just to generate that advance volunteer if things get ugly for a short duration.
