So they wait until after the bid to see how things are looking in the most likely new hire seats in the 777, MD and Bus. Even if 500 is in fact the number, to me it represents a need over time not training throughput which will be affected by a number of variables.
The time it takes to do testing, interview, background checks, indoc, training, and IOE puts dudes and dudettes to the end of the summer if they started the process tomorrow. Then a mediocre TA comes out causing a mass exodus to the door from the fence sitting 62 year old guys. But we aren't interviewing more than a trickle. Smart.
News flash - The 260 cap isn't going anywhere if the company is trying to divest themselves of their pension obligations all together. So you mind as well all leave now to beat the rush when the TA comes!
