PAY, BENEFITS, SCOPE are going to happen, otherwise a TA won't be ratified. Some of these guys foam at the mouth like a dog who bit a frog, but I think most everybody is on board with the big picture and it's perfectly fine to have some banter about the small stuff.
To play devil's advocate, the main gist of any airline contract is pay, benefits, and scope. I wouldn't call anyone who busts out the pitch forks over that a retard.
Did it ever occur to you that maybe those pitch fork wielding pilots have been burned in the past? Personally, I've been through unnecessary pay concessions, theft of flight benefits, and concessions to scope, so yeah, I'm a little sensitive to that stuff too.
