This morning I show up for 0659 flt from MCI-PHL to find out flight is delayed until 1017 due to crew rest. Now this already seems fishy as this would be an originator as MCI is a crew base, but ok I will buy it. But then it's announced that our inbound aircraft is going to be late from CLT. Wait..... What? How can our aircraft be doing a revenue flight from CLT and planned to be departing MCI at 0659?

My question is, is this just how things are going? I wish no bad on any airline but I think that this is a sign of the times regionals are desperate! There are too few pilots to fill seats. Call it what you will, but it's a shortage.
I have no idea of the particulars of this flight, but crew rest, reassignment issues, massive delays are simply SOP around here. The crew may have timed out in CLT. Maybe a GSO crew missed one of their double deadheads to a short overnight in MCI to operate the flight. Maybe a crew refused a blatantly illegal reassignment then was subsequently punished by being removed from their flight and replaced by a reserve crew. There really is no point to this rant other than chaos reigns supreme in our operation. We have no idea what the **** is going on any more than the folks in scheduling.

We do have a serious shortage of fresh meat to cover the attrition. Unfortunately, beyond the big bounties being offered to get meat through the door, we really have nothing else to offer. The SJS doesn't have the same draw as it did in the past. Other regionals have shinier jets along with other fringe benefits. Things like maybe a livable wage and some semblance of control over ones schedule. Amazing at it sounds, regional FO's sorta have to eat and pay rent and things like that.
