It has taken 8 to 10 years to recoup. This is chump to what is going to happen.

In my opinion, it's one of two things. Purely a guess.
1) to get pilots to accept lower pay for hopes of PS knowing there isn't going to be any. Delta mgmnt is well plugged into Wallstreet.
2) they want to buy Alaska with 3rd party and 3rd party won't engage with contract due.
