They are huge in Newark (CAL's big hub), why spread your self thin between there and JFK? Newark is nearly as close to downtown NYC as JFK is, and if they want to feed their international hub in EWR, why serve JFK?

Agreed. This makes sense for UAL. They were struggling with an orphaned JFK transcon operation with no connectivity anywhere. This allows them and DL to better focus on their strengths, particulaarly in the premium transcon markets and should help both defend the yield trashing wars of attrition in those markets from JB and VX.
