Yep, Oberon is right on this.

With that said, it's more common for smaller departments, who do their own direct hiring, to search social-media in order to gather information on their applicants. I have a family member that directs a department which falls into this category, and this person uses social-media searches on each applicant. AND, those searches have resulted in persons not being chosen to interview as well as persons not being hired....
