Like Ferd pointed out ....there are those who seem to gravitate to the office/training/union gig. There are some guys that have been doing one or more of these almost continuously since I was a new hire. I'm glad there are guys out there that want to do those things because I don't want to do it (been there and just want to be a crew dawg). The problem (speaking from personal experience) is that when you do it too long, you tend to lose touch and perspective with the line. There are some good non line people doing good work out there..but I think our union leadership has lost touch.
