This is the part I can't understand from the PWA:
8 Note two: A pilot who utilizes an off-rotation deadhead at the beginning of a rotation
9 that does not satisfy the requirements of Section 8 E. 8. will be responsible for his
10 transportation. [...]
Here's the requirements you have to satisfy:
44 a. Company Business travel can be booked in TravelNet without overbooking,
45 b. the routing does not pass through the pilot’s base,
46 c. the routing does not exceed the number of deadhead segments originally scheduled,
1 d. the routing is scheduled to arrive at a reasonable time before his required report under
2 Section 8 E. 5., and
3 e. the routing provides for a subsequent flight that is scheduled to arrive at a reasonable
4 time before his required report under Section 8 E. 5. if the pilot’s originally scheduled
5 routing provided for such a subsequent flight.
Assuming you can book the PS (up to 14 days ahead) without going through your base on a single leg (a, b & c), your description to me seems to satisfy d (you're getting there earlier), and e doesn't apply (I'm assuming there's not a subsequent flight from LGA that gets in >31 minutes prior).
So... if you don't make the flight for whatever reason, call scheds and it becomes their problem--just as if you were on your scheduled DH and got waylaid somewhere. In the situation you describe, I'd assume they'd PS you on the subsequent flight and tell you to get to the gate ASAP upon arrival in DTW--but, again, that'll be up to them.
It gets much hairier if you're offline getting to DTW--you're basically going to have to have the same backups in place as with any other commute.
All of the above is AIUI, so take it with a suitable grain of salt....
