It was never offered, and the few times I asked I was told no with attitude. On one occasion, the FO that took the seat actually laughed at me as I was dumped. Needless to say, trying to j/s on mainline was probably the most frustrating part of the job, especially being a "partner" airline. Every once in a while, I'd let that frustration show. I was called on it once (very nicely) and I reset my attitude. Point being commuting isn't the best time to snap judge a person.
Flip side-- I had one Delta CA going home from vacation have the gate agent list his name on the j/s but put me in the seat. She swapped my info for his when she closed the flight (I had been bumped 5 times, he witnessed 3). He had the next one so he was being really cool. His taking care of me like that is the only way I got to work. I saw him again the following week and we had a great talk over breakfast. Helluva guy!
I'm willing to bet that guy was a "Nerd" "Delta North" ect... The old Northwest guys and the original Delta guys are worlds apart. I can pick them out almost instantly when (if) they ask for a ride, happen to sit next to one on a deadhead, pass in the terminal....
