You guys are on to something here. With the change in the way retirements are funded and calculated, it makes more sense in the long run to front load pay and DC funding. A dollar raise is far more valuable the first year than a 10 dollar raise at the top of the scale.
We need to change the paradigm on how the group is compensated to reflect the new DC world. How we do that while we still have people brought in under the old system is the rub. It may take a decade or two and some sort of split in the year groups in compensation methods. "Because that is how we've always done it" is definitely not the answer and the path forward.
