If I call clearance and we get an EDCT of up to an hour or so, we usually board up anyway. By the time we get everybody boarded up, get the paperwork done, and make our way to the runway, we won't be sitting for very long anyway. As an added incentive, EDCTs are often pushed up if you can "be airborne five minutes from now." It's much easier to do that if you're at the end of the runway than if you're in the terminal's Panda Express.
