I think more do something more easily distinguished. Something like last four digits of your SSN, birthdate, date of hire.

As for aircraft and base assignments it's simply where they need bodies. Continental, Delta, UPS, and FedEx have recently been putting new hires in their larger widebody aircraft (I don't know what the percentages are but I know it happens). Just depends where the need is.
