I asked a person directly involved in hiring if taking a non flying job in retirement, while applying, would hurt their chances? The answer was "how long since they last flew as a professional pilot and why should we look at them if we have thousands of active pilots applying?"

Resume improvement, or currency, never hurt anyone.
