It's a guaranteed pay ratio for time spend "on the road" working. SkyWest now has a 4:1 trip rig. This means that for every 4 hours you are away from base "working" regardless of whether your on duty or not (think sleeping in a hotel somewhere), you are guaranteed 1 hour of pay.
Example: You show up to work at 8am on day 1 for a 4 day trip. You finish your trip on day 4 at 14:00. You have a TAFB of 80 hours. Now, that trip you may only fly (and get paid for) 16 hours. With the 4:1 TAFB rig you are guaranteed a min of 20 hours of pay. 4:1 or 80:4 = 20
