Actually I was on the 727 for 18 months - 17 months in LAX. The difference then was that the Pilots would pretty much pick whatever power setting they wanted. Now everyone mostly just goes with the pre-selected derates.

As far as the takeoff rolls being long on the 727 I really don't remember much difference between then and now. Of course sitting sideways my view was not as good.
