While I understand your skepticism, I know for a fact there were several airplanes that had only been here a matter of a weeks before they had serious maintenance issues and had to be replaced by a TSA owned spare. Several of them. And the XRs had more ice protection issues than any other after only being here a month or so. Like I said, TSA couldn't have screwed it up that fast.
