You tell them you are more than willing to do it but you need to check the flights to commute in. If you can't get there, you can't get there... Earlier this year I got a call for and out of base GS in DTW. I said I'd be happy to do it but the timing was tight and I needed to check the flights. Scheduler said hold on, then asked if I could get to Seatac and make a flight in 1.5 hours. I said yes and she put me on PS.
As someone else said, there are ways to get out of it.
