He wasn't canned for the Port Authority scandal; he was canned due to United's underperformance while he was CEO. The Port Authority scandal merely gave the BoD legal cover to fire him.

If United had been performing in line with Delta and American, FLIBs would still be CEO and the BoD would be providing cover for him.
