The last two years marketing has made large unplanned block hour increases very late, mostly on the 757/767 fleet. That was the reason for the huge surge in hiring last winter. Not sure with the falling PRASM if we will see that this year but it's been a trend.
The company did slow the training department this summer...in everything except the 7ER. In addition to the last minute marketing block hour increase in the 7ER, the company made a deal in the spring with the NBA (National Basketball Association) to sell some 757s DAL was retiring, but agreed to mx and crew them. This summer, they also made a business decision to keep another dozen or so 757s that were slated for the desert. Combined, this meant the 7ER category was grossly understaffed. The vast majority of the indoc classes starting in Apr/May went to this category. While every other training department slowed down this summer, the ER training department was slammed.

Hiring WILL return for those poolies who can wait. I've had friends go to United and American when offered jobs there. Once Delta called for indoc, they went Delta. I also have good friends that stayed American, United and SWA and are very happy there. Each guy's/girl's situation is different. If you can't swim that long and you have an option that fits, climb out onto a different deck and relax (once training is complete). Delta is great! But it's not the only game in town. Besides things change, and 5 years from now, another company may be "the place to be". Ya never know.
