I've flown standby to Manila twice and to Bangkok once within the last year. United to Dubai, then ZED ticket on Emirates to MNL / BKK.
Works also the other way around, United to Hong-Kong, then ZED tickets on Cathay Pacific.

Another option is to ride on supplemental Cargo carriers such as Atlas with a "confirmed" seat.
