It's actually a pretty weird situation. Effectively the company wanted us to own these things, presumably because they didn't want to deal with returns, digital cleaning, and re-issue. That would actually be OK if it was a free gift that I then owned, but they wanted pilots who left the company within the life of the gadget to re-imburse them. Even then there would be wireless updates of Jepps, OS, AV, etc. so it would be a grey area whether the company could legally read your mail if they wanted too.
But the pilots didn't want to have to re-imburse the company, so now it looks like they'll just be company property (fully returnable), which would would mean little to no expectation of privacy. Not saying they would snoop, but it would be within the realm of possibility.
If you're going to do anything online which the company might not like (ie post non-koolaid commentary on APC) probably safer to do it on your own device. I'm still carrying my own laptop, mainly because I have some special software which may not run on a surface, and I have my entire life stored which means I encrypt the HDD. If I tried to customize the EFB the way I want it, I'm afraid I'd break the EFB tool or something.
If you're just accessing browser-based online content and are not going to do/say anything that the company wouldn't like, I'd just carry the EFB.
