Dirty or underhanded? Nah, they're just playing the game that's been set up for them. If the majors want 121 currency, well... what other option do these people have? Besides, the more the regionals bleed, the quicker the regional airline idea becomes unsustainable. The quicker regionals are unsustainable, the more opportunity we have for bettering the profession as a whole.
I know people who were furloughed when they were in class. One guy I know was furloughed 5 weeks after he started at Republic. These companies will drop you at a moments notice if it is in their best to do so - no reason why that concept should be one-sided.
I sure hope the regional model falls apart. The new round of major airline pilots coming from regionals should remember where they came from and reclaim scope so this doesn't happen again. I know some old CA's here at QX have been p***ed about me and other like-minded pilots saying this, but these E175's should be flown by Alaska. 1500 mile flight from SEA to MKE? That is almost twice as long as Alaska's average stage length. I wonder what Alaska pilots are making of all this given that their Hawaii runs and coast-to-coast flights are about the only routes that can't be outsourced. I sure hope this means scope is their #1 priority because looks to me like roughly 60% or more of their flying could be done cheaper on an E175.
