The difference would be if you use sick leave now, you are paid for your trip. Nothing gained, nothing lost.
With the TA, if you use sick leave during your final 2 years, you still get paid for your trip...But, the sick pay amount is deducted from your final earnings, for end of career bonus consideration. In essence, you are costing yourself money by using sick leave. That will encourage guys even more not to call in sick.
