A lot people end up making the drive, so I'd say you could probably get away with not having your car up there and carpooling with some of your classmates. Some people end up renting a car for a portion of their stay, which actually ends up being cheaper than making the drive, which is something to consider as well. Welcome aboard.
Carpooling is dependent on who your friends are, and how many folks have cars. I would just drive up from SD, you can do it one day. Time it to arrive in Temecula about 1000 and you'll miss inland empire am traffic, and beat pm rush hour in LAS. Take the 215 in inland empire.
Driving will likely be cheaper than renting anyway, especially if you do sim in SLC.
