Wage Deductions

Under Tennessee law, deductions may only be taken out of pay with an employee's written authorization. Under Tennessee Wage Regulation Act, an employer may not do any of the following:

Penalize an employee or deduct any sum of money as a penalty or fine from the employee's wages;
Withhold from an employee's paycheck the cost of the following:
The employee's uniform;
Equipment;
Company loans;
Shortages; and
Negligence;
Hold an employee's paycheck until the employee returns his or her uniform;
Make any deductions from an employee's paycheck without the employee's consent; and
Hold an employee's paycheck for any reason.
