I usually get about 1 a month out of 4 pairings so I don't think they happen as often as we think. How often do you hear about the good things at work? I'm sure the more junior you are the more they happen to end up on your schedule.
I can tell you that there is work being done on trying to get more efficient schedules from our mainline partners it's just not something that happens over night.
I bid 20% and haven't done anything longer than a 2-day in more than 2 years. Right now I'm on a 3-day trip that was awarded to me and all of my day trips and standups went to junior guys. The PBS guys said "that's just what was awarded, and if I woulda heard him say company need again I woulda puked. This 3-day is a 22 hour trip but it has 9 hours of sits in it.
