As NEVETS said, the first 10 airplanes were on a CPA, but not under cost. It was break even. The additional aircraft were on a pro-rate cost basis.
And as mentioned, the ASA operation was underperforming.

It wasn't a matter of "Delta getting itself in order". It was as you alluded to, the airplanes were simply a placeholder for future DAL expansion. Once the economic downturn and recession started DAL changed those plans and that growth/expansion in LAX didn't happen, AT THAT TIME.
