Pilots are a fairly respectful lot especially to their Captains. Pilots can go through a career without often having their views challenged in the cockpit (or at home) however off-the-wall their ideas might be.
That is not the case with forums. It is like the ultimate CRM in some ways. If you say something off the wall you are going to get numerous people who will tell you so. For confident, well-adjusted and somewhat introspective folks such feedback is welcome. For some more delicate souls an anonymous and more superficial forum like this is more their speed. To each his own.

If you don't want to talk politics, religion, etc. stay out of the contentious issues section. Pretty simple.
