Its not about seeing the wing. Its only to check the wing light bulb.
Not sure how it became part of the walk-around routine but that's why you see it turned on at the gate all the time. The FO flips on the wing and wheel well lights when he walks into the cockpit and they stay on until he or the captain gets the walk around done.
