Reserve could be greatly improved with minimal changes, and minimal cost to the company. All it takes is the membership providing direction to the negotiating committee to make it a priority. This is an excellent opportunity to do exactly this, especially since that was one of the stated areas of conversation.
Reserve was never meant to be abused this badly under the current contract. As usual, the company takes advantage wherever they can. It is up to us to improve the system when we have the chance. This is that chance.
As for those who argue they will never sit reserve, or bid something so you don't have to, it's only for the new hire and for a short time, history has demonstrated otherwise. At some point in your career, most everyone here will be on reserve, and not by choice.
Dave, you and the rest of the reserve guys are completely right. I even bid reserves a couple of times over the past 3 or so years and it was not a happy time, BUUUUT, saying NO to this TA will not do anything for you NOW. MEC is not going back to the table with the company. This TA discussion is complete and it's going to a vote. Somehow you guys need to absorb this concept! The talks are done like the ISL! Either vote YES, and get 16% pay raise on JAN 1st, while on reserve or wait 4-6 years from now to get your reserve issues fully fixed with NO retro pay. And you get the extra raises in the following years with guarantees to match DAL rates. You made a choice to sit reserve. Now you have to make a choice to just vote yes or no. Yes gives you something and NO gives you nothing for a long time.
